This is a great way to leverage the power of your community (and connections) to get clients. It's a non-salesy way of showing up as a leader... giving support and making a powerful request for support. Imagine what it will be like when you have a team of people supporting you to thrive!

Who to Begin Chats With
Anyone you like. :) Past Clients, Consults that said no, Current Clients, Colleagues, Friends and Family.

When to Have Referral Conversations
Every 4 months (after Mastery Events) is a great time to check in with your community.

Always show up in service to them... And you can ask for a different type of referral each round. For example, this month, you can ask for referrals to consults... 4 months from now you can ask for referrals to your events. And, 4 months later, you can ask for referrals to Event Hosts.

Intro to Referral Emails 💌

This is a message from your referral partner to the person or people they want to refer to you. The Event Invite Referral Email could go out to someone's entire email list.

The emails or private messages are written in your Referral Partner’s voice. It’s intended to be sent from your Referral Partner to their people.

Fill in the blanks of this Referral Email template and send it off to your Referral Partner as soon as possible (ideally within 30 minutes of the conversation).

It’s ideal if they agree to 'cc:' you in the email or include you in the Private Message because it will be much more likely that it will lead to a conversation.

⭐ What Is the Intention of a Referral Conversation?

To show up first to connect, serve, acknowledge and be curious about this person you appreciate. Then, after they have been well served, you can ask them to refer people to you.

The goal is to have 10-20 Referral Partners regularly referring people to you.

⭐ When Do I Use This Template?

This template is VERY similar to the Private Message to Book Consults template. But there are 3 key differences:


1. Private Messaging Vs. Zoom
While you could get referrals from private messaging or texting, we encourage you to get on Zoom to have the referral conversation.

It's a great excuse to connect with friends, past clients, family members... and the extra effort you make to connect will make it so much more likely that they'll refer people to you.

2. Your Intention
If it's a Heartselling™ Conversation, your primary intention is to book a consult (and your secondary intention is to get referral(s).

If it's a Referral Conversation, your primary intention is to get referrals (and your secondary intention could be to book consult(s).

3. The Referral Email
At the end of this template is a referral email you can send to the person who agrees to refer.

⭐ Who Makes a Great Referral Partner?

Anyone in your life that you like who would know who you are if you reached out to them.
And, yes, family members sometimes make the best referral partners.

⭐ Why Invite Them to a Zoom Call?

If you’re asking them to go out of their way to refer people to you, it seems to make sense to go out of your way to make your connection with them really important.

And, if you’re on a call with them, you can show up in service of them before you ask them to support you and your business.

You can also acknowledge them and get curious with them. So that by the time you invite them to choose to refer people to you, they feel great about you and your relationship with them.

It’s hard to do all of that in a private message. 😊

⭐ What If this Person is also a Potential Client?

If you know that they're a Potential Client before you start the conversation, use the Private Message to Book Consults template ↗️ instead.

If halfway through the conversation, they express interest in working with you, you can either:

🌱 If you believe that this person could send a lot of people your way... Offer 1 session as a gift and ask them to refer people to you if they get value.

⭐ Can You Offer Gifts or Commissions for Referrals?

Gifts or commissions are a great way to thank people for referring. Offering an incentive encourages them to refer others to you, who otherwise wouldn't take the time to do so.

And, it can also have people want to refer people to you over and over again. But gifts and commissions are not necessary, and in some professions, it is against the code of ethics.

We have changed our referral program up a lot, but in 2023, Thrive offers an additional session with your Thrive Business Coach or with our Tech Guide (Boyet or Mel) for every person you send to the Summit.

If you do offer gifts or commissions, you can either let your referral partners know ahead of time (as we do) what the gift is. Or you can surprise them after you get the client, with a gift or commission.

⭐ How Do You Reach Out?

You can text, private message, audio message, or email. Audio message is ideal because your voice can convey your appreciation of them and will most likely have them be inspired to jump on zoom with you.

⭐ What is the Difference Between Referral Partners, JV Partners, and Event Hosts?

Referral Partners
Referral Partners will introduce you to one ideal client at a time.

For example:
"If you are talking with your Aunt Sally and she knows 3 people who could use your services...
She would send separate introductions to each of those people."

JV Partners and Event Hosts
JV Partners and Event Hosts have the ability to introduce you to a LOT of your ideal clients all at once.


Event Host
An Event Host has the ability to invite you to speak at their event.
You would use the Book Speaking Events Template ↗️ when you speak with them.

JV Partner
A JV Partner could introduce you to their email list or to their social media following.
You can use the Create JV Partnerships Template ↗️ when you speak with them.

⭐ Who Should You Reach Out to?

Referral Conversations are ideal if:
You are in Client Attraction Mastery. You don't have any funnels set up yet.

Referral Partners are a great way to build momentum right away! (You don't have to wait to get 10-20 people referring people to you.)

Event Host and JV Conversations are much higher leverage (more results with less effort). But they're only effective when you have the foundations in place.

Event Host Conversations are ideal if:
You're in Platinum and you've already taken Six Figure Speaker (live) or you've studied the Online Course. so that you can use our system to bring in a lot of clients from your Speaking Events.

JV Partnership Conversations are ideal if:
You have a funnel set up to receive the names and emails of the people your JV Partner sends to you.

If you're in Mastery, the Consult Funnel is a great place to send them.

If you're in Platinum, it's ideal that your JV Partners send their people to your Free Gift Funnel, where you are likely to get a much higher rate of opt ins.

Once they opt in, you can invite them to a Free Consult or Free Event. And, from there, you can invite them into your Package or Program.

⭐ What Are the 3 Types of Referrals You Can 'Ask' For?

Decide What Your 'Ask' Is
Before you start a conversation with a Potential Referral Partner, decide what your Ask is. What is your top priority in your business right now?

Option 1 | Free Consults
Want to fill your calendar with consults? Ask your Referral Partner to invite people to your Free Consult.

Option 2 | Event Participants
Leading an upcoming Event? Ask your Referral Partner to invite people to your Free Event.


Option 3 | Event Hosts
Want to speak at other people's events (online/in person)? Ask for an intro to an Event Host.

What if you want all 3 types of Referrals right away?
Asking for multiple things in one conversation creates confusion, overwhelm, and possibly even a feeling of scarcity.

Choose one 'Ask' and when you get to Stage 3 in the conversation template below, make that 'Ask' powerfully.

Then... when you talk to your Referral Partner 4 months later, you can ask for a different type of referral.

⭐ How Often Do You Reach Out to Referral Partners?

Leaders stay connected with their people. And, this gives you an excuse to stay in touch with the people in your life that you care about and that care about you...

So... we recommend reaching out to ALL of your Potential Referral Partners every 4 months.
